Founded in 1925, the NBA is the oldest and largest network of mostly African-American lawyers and judges in the country. The organization represents approximately 44,000 lawyers, judges, law professors, and law students, and has eighty-four affiliated chapters in the United States. Its mission is to advance the science of jurisprudence, preserve the independence of the judiciary and uphold the honour and integrity of the legal profession. Fred Whitfield, president, vice president and lieutenant governor of the Hornets, is an attorney and former player agent who previously served as director of business and legal affairs for the Jordan brand, an entity controlled by the Hornets` majority owner and NBA great, Michael Jordan. Whitfield did not respond to a request for comment on the team`s legal leadership plans, according to Daniels. Whether it`s legal counsel to a major NBA franchise, taking the bold leap to start a new business, or even writing a children`s book, trust is at the heart of everything Duckett does. And when creative intuition calls, it encourages other women to take the same leap of faith. An online directory of Clippers employees identifies Winsberg as the general counsel of the Intuit Dome, the $1.8 billion privately funded arena. The team laid the groundwork for its new home last year and is expected to move in before the 2024-25 NBA season. Sports law is strongly influenced by contract law.
It is a legal requirement that all professional athletes have contracts that stipulate how much they will be paid and how long they will play for a particular team. In sports law, contracts are usually worth large sums of money, and therefore sports agents are heavily involved in the negotiation. Duckett, who has served as the Clippers` general counsel for the past seven years, decided to leave her NBA position to launch her athlete legal practice in July 2022. After decades of working as a litigator at three Los Angeles law firms, Duckett joined the Clippers in `15 and became the first and only black woman to serve as a leading lawyer for an NBA team. Our sports lawyers represent all major player associations in the United States, professional athletes, classes of players in antitrust and other disputes, sports ownership groups, sports event organizers, intellectual property licensees and licensors, media companies, sports agents, lenders and insurers of sports team and facility debt, government agencies, coaches, competing sports leagues, sponsors and others involved in litigation and transactions in the sports industry. Our experience spans the full spectrum of sports industry legal issues: Los Angeles Clippers general counsel Nicole Duckett is leaving the team this month to launch a boutique law firm serving a sports clientele. That`s where Nikki Duckett comes in, navigating legal language and creatively advising her athlete clientele on the types of decisions that will help them build their legacy off the field. Think of their company, the Nikki Duckett Collective, as a commercial extension for gamers. „I see athletes becoming CEOs of their own brands,” says Duckett. „I realized that the missing piece to really help these athletes take their careers and brands to the next level is high-level legal representation.” Despite Daniels` departure, the Hornets continue to be well stocked with legal talent. The team`s assistant general manager, David Duquette, is a former lawyer for the club, whose director of basketball strategy, Jon Moul, is also the club`s assistant lawyer. Christopher Chestnut received the highest honor – Best Lawyer of the Year.
The award is exactly what it looks like – the best overall advocate for innovation, vision, leadership and engagement in the legal community. Chestnut founded The Chestnut Law Firm LLC at the age of 26 after being encouraged by his mentor, renowned civil lawyer Willie Gary. Since opening in 2006, the company has grown and now has offices in Gainesville, Jacksonville and Miami. Winsberg updated his LinkedIn profile this week to show that he is now the legal chief legal officer of the Clippers, Intuit Dome and Forum Entertainment. Ballmer paid $400 million in 2020 to buy The Forum, a former home of rival Los Angeles Lakers, from Dolan. The Innovation Award was presented to Jennifer Fisher. „The award is given to lawyers who use technology and other innovative approaches,” she explains. As General Counsel for Construction Cost Data and Software Developer Marshall & Swift/Boeckh, she oversees the company`s overall legal philosophy and strategy. „It was interesting to get the award in New Orleans because a big part of our job is building the technology used to determine how much it costs to replace a home.
Some homes were so destroyed by the floods that followed Hurricane Katrina that aerial photographs had to be used to assess the damage. As with any new technology, we need to protect it, so I work with a lot of intellectual property lawyers,” says Fisher. She has been active in the NBA since graduating from the University of Chicago School of Law a decade ago, where President Obama was one of her professors. The ability to talk to people compassionately and make connections is something Duckett learned as a child. Growing up, his father worked for a major oil company and his family moved all over the world. Early on, Duckett learned to speak with people`s emotional language, a skill she still uses today in conversations with athletes. Because she can communicate with them, her clients are attracted to her and entrust her with her important legal decisions. Former Clippers coach Doc Rivers hailed his recent decision as brilliant and groundbreaking for the industry, praising his work during his time with the franchise. Building the team`s legal department from scratch; play a significant role in numerous transactions between the franchise and Fortune 500 companies such as American Airlines, Kia Motors and Red Bull; Duckett negotiated one of the league`s most lucrative television deals and made an indelible impact in Los Angeles. Winsberg was hired to lead an arena project born out of a lengthy legal battle between billionaire Clippers owner Steven Ballmer and James Dolan, owner of the NBA`s New York Knicks.
